It was only seconds after the bell rang that the door of the lecture hall burst open, and he could feel his soul exiting his body already.
“KIT, MY DEAR!” screeched Felix, Kit’s self appointed ‘best friend’, crashing the end of his class for the third time that day. Before Kit could respond, he was already striding over to the desk and grabbing the text books out of his hand.
“I can pack my own bag Felix.” Kit said, keeping his tone even. This was annoying, but even if Felix never listened to him and arguing with him was like arguing with a brick wall, he felt the need to say it at least once.
“Think nothing of it, what are friends for if not to help each other with our daily struggles? No, I won’t hear of it, how could I stand by and let you drag all these heavy textbooks around? Just leave it to me.”
Part of him wanted to hold on to his bag strap and refuse to let go, to snatch his things back and tell Felix to fuck off. He quashed that part of him down as usual, knowing from experience that it just wasn’t worth it. Kit remembered years ago, yelling at Felix in high school that he didn’t want him around, and how Felix had simply grabbed his hands and proclaimed in front of the entire canteen that no matter how much Kit was hurting inside, no matter how much his trauma made him push his loved ones away, Felix would stay by his side. Any protest had always been turned around on him and used to boost Felix’s own ego. Here he was still, preening before all Kit’s classmates as though he was making a grand noble sacrifice, more invested in looking good for them than noting that Kit had been staring witheringly at him in silence for a good 30 seconds.
When Felix pulled the strap off of his shoulder, Kit simply let go. ‘It’s just a few minutes walk to my next class. Freedom soon.’ he told himself, walking towards the door. It was a mantra he’d been repeating since he’d arrived on campus this morning and his stalker buddy had attached to his hip. Felix, who had been busy chatting up the girl that sat across from Kit, finally noticed and winked at her before chasing after him.
“Kit, wait up, didn’t you see that Amy was trying to talk to us? You’ve been isolating yourself so much lately, but you can’t spend your life hiding. You really need to put yourself out there more, I know you’re shy but isn’t it so lonely having me as your only friend? Oh, it’s probably my fault, I’ve let you be dependent on me for so long--”
He had to tune him out for his own sanity. Even if he tried to correct him, Felix was too deep in his own fantasy world to acknowledge anything that conflicted his narrative. Kit counted down from 10 in his head, ignoring the arm that was slung around his shoulder as Felix continued his dramatics. The lab was just around the corner and he only had to put up with this prattling for less than a minute before he’d be free.
That’s what he thought before the alarm started blaring. The siren was a new security measure introduced after that giant swan had stepped on the library last month. The crowd around them started to panic, rushing in all directions. Felix was already pulling on his arm, telling him to hurry to safety.
What an annoying situation. Kit knew he had to get away as soon as possible, he would have to discard his bag entirely and get it back from Felix later, that was fine, but if he wanted to sneak off the fastest way was to pretend he was panicking too. Felix would come looking to pester and comfort him later, but he’d just have to deal with it when it came. First he had to break his hold. Kit dug his heels in and tried to wrench his arm back; unfortunately Felix was persistent as always and held fast.
“What are you doing?!” he yelled, yanking him forward. “Just follow me, I’ll protect you, there’s a safe place over--”
By a stroke of good fortune, some guy came barrelling through at that moment, bulldozing through their arms and breaking Felix’s hold in their panic to get through. ‘Lucky’, Kit thought, turning on his heel and sprinting through the crowd, ignoring Felix’s shouts after him.
There was an alley around the block he could duck into, away from the main road and unlikely to have much traffic in such an emergency. His phone was still in his bag so he couldn’t call his partner, but that was fine. Unisonya would appear once she saw the monster rampaging. ‘Thinking about it, where is the rampage? It must be a ways away, haven’t heard anything on these streets.’
The lack of devastation struck Kit as odd as he raised his hand, the ring on his finger beginning to glow. But before he could start the transformation he heard footsteps behind him, and hurriedly whipped around, shoving his hand behind his back and waving it frantically as if trying to shake off the magic before anyone could see. Someone was there.
...Five someone’s, to be exact, all advancing on him. Kit looked between them all, bemused. “Hello…?”
“You’ve been a real pain to get alone, kid.” one of the men said, pulling a gun on him. Kit’s blood ran cold. At this point he was accustomed to his life being in danger, henchmen threatening his life was nothing new. But somehow creeps with magic lasers felt different to an actual real life gun in his face.
“Oi! You listening to me?”
Oh. They’d been talking. Kit tore his gaze away from the barrel and looked him in the eye. “Sorry?”
“Jesus, you rich kids.” One of the men next to him said, brandishing a pair of handcuffs. “Give us your fucking hands.”
Rich kids? ‘It’s been a while since anyone came looking for ransom.’ Kit thought as he raised his hands, struggling to think quickly. Sure he could easily run away, but how could he escape from this without revealing his identity? “Are you really kidnapping me in the middle of a monster attack? Of all times?”
“You really are an idiot, ah. We tripped the alarm, we just said we needed to get you alone.” one of the goons snapped.
Well, that was one weight off his shoulders, no buildings were going to get stepped on today if he got kidnapped. But he was still stuck, and a false alarm tripped in one university was unlikely to attract Unisonya’s attention. She wouldn’t be coming for him any time soon. At a loss for what to do, Kit let them grab him and start marching him out of the alley, over to their van. In all the confusion, nobody noticed him getting shoved into the back with his arms cuffed behind him.
